On this page, I'll be sharing my process for reconditioning each computer.
Source unused/old/broken laptops and computers from SF residents by posting online ads on websites like Craigslist, Freecycle, and Trashnothing, which allow me to post free local ads and get in contact with people.
Computers are picked up to the donor's convenience.
Repair and recondition the computers. All data will be securely erased.
Document the work as well as the computer on this website.
Distribute the computers to the public. We will hand out computers directly to members of our community as well as working with organizations that can distribute them as well.
Wipe down all surfaces of the laptop with a disinfecting wipe. Clean up the casing, keyboard and screen with more disinfecting wipes, paper towels, and solvents used for glue stains.
Plug the computer in and check for power. If the computer boots up normally, move onto step 3.
a) If the computer doesn't boot up, diagnose and fix the problem.
Erase all user data from the computer by performing a factory reset or securely erasing data (we use DoD Short and DoD 5220.22-M wipes when applicable).
Create a test user on the laptop
Run tests and benchmarks to make sure certain functions are working as well as testing the computer's ability.
User data is wiped once again and is ready to be set up. The computer can now be given away.
